My tensioner broke and everything you described happened to my car. It's only 1 bolt if I remember correctly and you will need a pry bar to put the serpentine belt back on

So, my bros gonna have fun driving it. GREAT!
I'm tempted just to have him lie and tell my uncle it broke down.......

Well, brother tried to start it and it wouldn't even turn over.
Now we get to have it towed all the way to Chicago.
*quote from my uncle*
"We're either gonna get it fixed and running like new, or your getting a new car."
I am on the side of new car.
You could also try a electronics reset. The reset pattern for your vehicle is as follows
Instructions
- 1Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position without starting the vehicle.
- 2Press the gas pedal to the floor slowly three times within 10 seconds.
- 3Turn the ignition off. Wait 10 seconds and start the engine.
Sorry for double post. But I missed this at end.
I know yours is a 97 so i don't know if it is considered older but
if your vehicle is a bit older try holding the Reset button for 10-15 seconds while the engine is off and the key is in the on position.

And to further add to my list of uneditable post. After a quick google search. Its actually a common issue. Remove only your neg battery cable. Try to clean any corrosion. Leave it unhooked for at least 5 minutes. And rehook it.
From what i read it seems to only be a temp fix but it appears to work everytime,
I ended up figuring out what it was by searchin google. Still, couldn't do anything seeing as I'm not due back till Friday now. -_-'
It just got picked up and hour ago and should be near the mech shop waiting to be fixed.
